Shimla:

Seabuckthorn, known as ‘Chharma’ in the Himalayan regions, is renowned for its medicinal properties and nutrient-rich fruits. Thriving in the cold desert areas of the Himalayas, this plant is highly resilient to harsh climates, poor soil, drought, and high altitudes. Particularly prevalent in the cold and arid regions of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, Seabuckthorn is gaining popularity due to its impressive medicinal benefits and exceptional nutritional profile. Its leaves, fruits, and roots are valuable for both health and environmental sustainability. Dubbed a superfood, Seabuckthorn is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, with its unique characteristic being the presence of Vitamin B12, produced by Actinomycetes in its seeds. This makes it stand out from other plants and is particularly beneficial for vegetarians, as Vitamin B12 is usually found only in animal products. Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell formation and nerve function, and its deficiency can lead to neurological issues like weakness, fatigue, and depression. Therefore, Seabuckthorn is an invaluable nutrient source for vegetarians.
